Innovation in concrete construction - successful 19th Dresden Concrete Day at TU Dresden
How can new scientific findings be transferred to construction practice? And how can modern processes further develop or even replace traditional methods? The Dresden Concrete Day, which is organized annually by the Bauakademie Sachsen, TU Dresden, the Information Center Concrete and the Association of German Concrete Engineers, successfully contributes to bringing new innovations deep into the industry. The conference is aimed in a targeted manner at civil engineers, designers, technicians and experts from planning offices, construction administrations and companies.
Focus: Change in reinforced concrete construction
The focus was on the transformation of traditional reinforced concrete construction. In view of scarce resources, modern composite concretes, such as carbon concrete, which do not require steel reinforcement, were presented, as well as repair methods for the preservation of existing structures. These materials not only enable material-saving construction, but are also suitable for the 3D concrete printing process.
Lectures by renowned experts
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Viktor Mechtcherine introduced the audience to concrete 3D printing and reported on the opportunities and possibilities offered by this digital production method in times of an increasing shortage of skilled workers and ever higher architectural requirements.
Other top-class speakers included Prof. Dr.-Ing. Steffen Marx from TU Dresden. In his presentation, he analyzed the collapse of the Carola Bridge - from construction to the final failure of the structure, as well as the progression of damage over time - and emphasized the need to rethink prestressing steel structures.
Further contributions and discussions
In addition to the keynote speeches, the conference offered further contributions from experts Dr.-Ing. Frank Schladitz, Dr.-Ing. Frank Jesse, M.Sc. Jan Eska, Dr.-Ing. Christoph Hahn, Dipl.-Ing. Martin Spindler and Dipl.-Ing. Frank Halm. They discussed current research results and practice-oriented applications in concrete construction.
The 19th Dresden Concrete Day emphasized the importance of the continuous integration of research results into construction practice and promoted the exchange of ideas on future-oriented technologies in concrete construction.
