New module BIW4-81earthen construction 🌱
ℹ️ NEW MODULE - BIW4-81 LEHMBAU - from winter semester 2025/26
How can teaching today be research-oriented, practical and forward-looking? How can we design a built environment that is fit for a climate-neutral future in 2045? And what role does the combination of traditional construction and digital technologies play in this?
The new module BIW4-81 Earthen Construction, which will be offered from October 2025, is dedicated to these questions. The focus is on earth - a local, reusable and resource-saving building material with great potential for climate-friendly construction. Together, we will shed light on clay from a new perspective, test its use in a digital context and combine craftsmanship with modern robotics and additive manufacturing.
🔹 Structure of the module
You will gain in-depth knowledge in four thematic blocks:
-
Block 1: Fundamentals of earthen construction
-
Block 2: Dimensioning & analysis of load-bearing earthen construction systems
-
Block 3: Digital production, robotics & advanced topics
-
Block 4: Guest lectures by experts from research and practice
A high proportion of practical and laboratory work will give you a deep understanding of the material and enable you to apply standardized design methods. At the same time, you will gain insights into the digital construction processes of tomorrow.
The module is offered on an interdisciplinary basis by the Institute of Construction Materials and the Institute of Concrete Structures at TU Dresden and addresses central topics of the CARE Cluster of Excellence.
🟠 Credit points & form of examination
8 ECTS
