Engineering Excellence at the Beyer Building: Permanent Photo Exhibition by Prof. Cengiz Dicleli Opens
A new permanent exhibition has been on display in the renovated Beyer Building at TU Dresden since last Friday, October 30, 2026. Under the title“Engineering Architecture in the Beyer Building,”the Faculty of Civil Engineering is showcasing approximately 40 large-format black-and-white photographs of notable structures.
Dean Prof. Birgit Beckmann giving the opening speech
Speakers at the opening included Dean Prof. Birgit Beckmann, Dr. Undine Krätzig (Board Member and Executive Director of the Society of Friends and Supporters of TU Dresden e. V.), and Senior Professor Manfred Curbach. Prof. Beckmann and Prof. Curbach co-curated the exhibition. Photographer Prof. Cengiz Dicleli—a civil engineer and former professor of structural engineering at the University of Konstanz—was also present and opened the exhibition alongside the speakers.
Architectural Structures in Black and White
Prof. Cengiz Dicleli
For about ten years, Dicleli has been documenting engineering structures through photography. His work is intended as a tribute to the design expertise behind the structures and as a contribution to architectural heritage. The exhibition focuses on works by Ulrich Finsterwalder, Herbert Schambeck, and Gerd Lohmer.
On display are, among others, photographs of:
-
the Nibelungen Bridge in Worms
-
Fehmarnsund Bridge
-
Trudelturm in Berlin-Adlershof
-
The Capella concrete ship
-
The Blue Wonder and Dresden Central Station
Dicleli deliberately chose black-and-white photography for these images to highlight the materiality of the exposed concrete and to capture the buildings’ clear structures in public spaces.
Connection to the Location and Educational Value
Prof. Manfred Curbach co-curated the exhibition and provided a brief insight into the history of the Beyer-Bau
The Beyer Building also fits the exhibition’s theme: When it was built, it utilized reinforced concrete construction—a highly advanced technique at the time. During its renovation in recent years, historic ceilings were preserved from demolition by retrofitting them with carbon-fiber-reinforced concrete.
Dr. Undine Krätzig (GFF TU Dresden e. V.)
The approximately 40 photographs are freely accessible on the first and second floors of the Beyer Building (George-Bähr-Straße 1) during the university’s regular building hours. The faculty views the exhibition primarily as illustrative material and a source of inspiration for students in their studies. In addition to the new exhibition by Cengiz Dicleli, a variety of images depicting the eventful history of this well-known TU building have been on display in the building’s hallways for several weeks now. These photo exhibitions in the Beyer Building were funded by the Society of Friends and Supporters of TU Dresden e. V. with grants from the George-Bähr Forum.
