Short description
The project “Life Cycle-Oriented Maintenance Management of Municipal Bridge Infrastructure” aimed to support municipal authorities in Germany in the sustainable maintenance of their bridge structures. In collaboration with PD GmbH, a guideline was developed based on an analysis of five model municipalities. It offers practical recommendations for improving maintenance management and thus helps ensure the long-term safety and functionality of their bridges. In addition to an inventory analysis, the project identified organizational hurdles and established recommendations for action based on best practices. The guide is complemented by self-assessment tools and a user-friendly process diagram.
Project structure
A key focus of the guide is on introducing systematic processes and utilizing modern technologies to detect and interpret damage at an early stage and to efficiently implement preventive measures. The guide recommends establishing centralized and standardized databases for bridge data, conducting regular structural inspections in accordance with DIN 1076, and integrating innovative monitoring methods such as sensor-based measurements. It also emphasizes the importance of long-term financial and personnel planning to avoid shortages of skilled workers and financial constraints.
Another key focus is on optimizing the integration of grant funding and promoting intermunicipal cooperation. The guide recommends reducing bureaucratic hurdles in the grant application process and establishing flexible financing models that give municipalities greater leeway. In addition, it outlines ways to delegate tasks to external partners in order to make bridge maintenance more time- and resource-efficient.
Preventive municipal maintenance management
Overall, the action guideline provides a comprehensive foundation for municipal authorities to make the transition from reactive to preventive maintenance management. This not only helps extend the service life of bridges but also promotes sustainable infrastructure development and climate protection.
