Contents and qualification goals:

Contents of the module are design, construction and calculation of bridges in steel, concrete and composite construction. The focus is on road bridges as well as railroad and sidewalk bridges.

Upon completion of the module, students will be familiar with the load assumptions of bridges, which include self-weight and live loads of the various types of use, as well as temperature, wind effects including aerodynamic effects and ship impact. They are familiar with the different types of bridges, such as beam, arch, cable-stayed and suspension bridges, and are able to design, construct and calculate in different construction methods. Furthermore, they know rules for the aesthetic design and execution of bridges.

Students understand the relationship between local conditions, design requirements and assembly methods and are able to incorporate this into the structural design of bridges. They are able to create appropriate calculation models and perform structural analyses.
They are familiar with the most important equipment elements for bridge structures, such as transition structures, bearings and drainage facilities, and take them into account in the design process.

Teaching methods:

4 SWS lecture and 2 SWS tutorial

Prerequisites for participation:   

The competences to be acquired in the modules of the basic studies (BIW1-01 to BIW1-11) and the modules Fundamentals of Design (BIW2-01), Structural Analysis (BIW2-02), Steel Construction and Timber Construction Fundamentals (BIW2-04), Reinforced Concrete Construction (BIW2-05), Structural Analysis 1 (BIW3-01), Design Theory and Mechanics of Materials in Solid Construction (BIW3-02) and in Steel Construction, Timber Construction and Application of Fracture Mechanics (BIW3-03) are required.

Applicability:

In the undergraduate diploma program in civil engineering: Compulsory elective module in the main course of study, in particular for the specialization in structural engineering In the postgraduate course of study in civil engineering: Compulsory elective module, in particular for the specialization in structural engineering.

Requirements for the award of credit points:

Credit points are earned if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of an assignment (group assignment, 80 hrs. per student) with colloquium.

Credit points and grades:

8 credit points can be acquired through the module. The module grade results from the grade of the written examination.

Frequency of module:

Module is offered every academic year, starting in the winter semester.

Workload:

The total workload is 240 hours.

Duration of the module:

7th semester: 2 SWS lecture and 1 SWS tutorial
8th semester: 2 SWS lecture and 1 SWS tutorial

In addition to the subject area of concrete bridge construction (Marx), the courses also include the subject area of steel and composite bridges (Stroetmann).

Small exercise examples will be integrated into the lecture.

Assignment

The assignment has a scope of 80 hours per student. The assignment is preferably done in groups of 4. The assignment is handed out at the beginning of each semester. In addition, a kick-off event takes place in which the contents and expectations are presented using an old assignment as an example. The assignment is submitted in the following semester approximately one month before the start of the examination period. The supervision of the work is taken over by the steel or concrete structure institute, depending on the assignment. The institutes offer regular consultation opportunities. 

Prüfung

The module examination consists of a assignment. The assignment is to be defended in a colloquium. In the colloquium, further lecture contents are also tested.

The examinations are offered in each examination period.
