Applicability:
Compulsory elective module in the specialization studies especially for the specializations hydraulic engineering and environment as well as structural engineering.
Previous knowledge:
Building Materials (BIW1-08), Steel Construction and Timber Construction (BIW2-04), Reinforced Concrete Construction (BIW2-05).
Lecture Content:
In the context of special structures of hydraulic engineering, the special reinforced concrete structures are treated as they are used in hydraulic engineering. For this purpose, the formation of cracks in reinforced concrete structures as well as the hydration of massive concrete structures and the resulting stresses are dealt with first. Based on this, the white tank and its design principles are presented as a prototype of water-impermeable concrete structures. Furthermore, locks and arch dams as well as other types of structures and finally rehabilitation methods are dealt with as typical structures of hydraulic engineering.
You can find working material here OPAL.

Heat and its coupling with mechanics Basic concepts of heat and temperature, application to concrete cross-sections under the influence of hydration, generalized temperature strains, temperature stresses with linear elastic behavior and time-varying Young's modulus |
White tubs Impermeable concrete, special actions, buoyancy control, frictional restraint in the bottom joint and other restraint loads, load-bearing behavior, special features of design and reinforcement layout |
Locks Components, operating conditions and actions, load-bearing behavior, preliminary design, joints and seals, installation parts, examples |
Dam walls Weight dams, arch dams, actions, earthquake loads, design and calculation of arch dams, constraints, manufacturing aspects of mass concrete |
Rehabilitation and reinforcement Crack injection, rehabilitation of frost and debris damage, subsequent sealing of defective cantilever column joints |
Exercise
Small calculation examples are integrated into the lecture material.
Assignment
Within the scope of the subject Special Structures of Hydraulic Engineering, there are no course papers offered.
Examination
The knowledge of the subjects Special Hydraulic Structures and Hydraulic Steel Structures is examined in a joint written exam of 90 min.
In addition, the module includes a 90 min written exam on the mechanics of materials in solid construction. The module grade results from the average of the grades of the two examinations.
