Contents and qualification goals:
Contents of the module are construction with renewable raw materials, maintenance of buildings, environmental compatibility of building materials as well as recycling of building materials and sustainable structural design.
Upon completion of the module, students will have in-depth knowledge of the use of wood and wood-based materials in construction with a focus on environmentally friendly manufacturing and processing technologies. They have mastered the basics of environmentally friendly maintenance of structures and are able to assess the environmental compatibility of building materials from their manufacture and use to their disposal or recycling. They also have knowledge of environmentally sound manufacturing and recycling technologies for bulk construction materials, including asphalt. The students know about processing techniques for construction waste and the reuse of the material thus obtained.
In addition, they are familiar with special features of sustainable building design, production, transport and installation as well as the required ecologically relevant verifications including construction examples.
Teaching methods:
6 SWS lecture
Prerequisites for participation:
Competencies to be acquired in the modules Building Materials (BIW1-08), Fundamentals of Design (BIW2-01) and Steel Construction, Timber Construction and Application of Fracture Mechanics (BIW3-03) are required.
Applicability:
In the undergraduate diploma program in civil engineering: Elective module in the main course of study, especially for the specializations in structural engineering and hydraulic engineering and the environment. In the postgraduate program Civil Engineering: Compulsory elective module, in particular for the specializations in structural engineering and hydraulic engineering and the environment.
Requirements for the award of credit points:
The credit points are acquired if the module examination (180 min) is passed. Each subject area accounts for 30 min of the examination per SWS lecture.
Credit points and grades:
8 credit points can be acquired through the module. The module grade is the arithmetic mean of the grades of the two examinations.
Frequency of the module:
Module is offered every academic year, starting in the winter semester.
Workload:
The total workload is 240 hours.
Duration of the module:
7th semester: 2 SWS lecture Building with renewable raw materials.
7th semester: 1 SWS lecture Maintenance of structures and environmental compatibility of building materials
8th semester: 1 SWS lecture Sustainable structural design
8th semester: 2 SWS lecture Building Material Recycling
