Field testing of measurement methods for the detection of cavities created by beavers on the Oder in Brandenburg
Table of contents
Brief description
As part of a project focusing on the practical application and evaluation of methods for detecting cavities created by beavers on the river dykes of the Oder in Brandenburg, the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics at TU Dresden (IWD) was responsible for testing the methods "thermal photography", "underwater photogrammetry" and "satellite-based radar interferometry (InSAR)" following previous laboratory tests at IWD. In addition, IWD carried out dynamic probing to verify suspected areas. The IWD's measurement missions took place in June and September 2020 on a section of the Oder dyke near Genschmar.
The thermal photography (recording of thermal images) was carried out on June 26, 2020 using drones in cooperation with the company APUS and ZALF. The tasks of the IWD consisted in the preparation, coordination and detailed coordination of the flight, which was realized by the company APUS, as well as in the recording of the climatic conditions over the duration of the measurement mission. Parallel to the thermal photography, an orthomosaic and the vegetation index were recorded as well as the photogrammetric reconstruction of the digital elevation model in the study area. On the basis of the recorded data, it was examined whether beaver-induced cavities could be identified through combined visual interpretation of the respective data sets and image processing methods.
