CLANCY
“Improve habitat quality and climate-adaptivity of freshwater ecosystems through management of alien invasive aquatic invertebrates (CLANCY)”
Table of contents
Brief description
The aim of the project CLANCY is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the North Sea region, in particular by exploring management options for the Chinese Mitten Crab. The Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is an alien species that can significantly alter the biocoenosis and even the hydro-morphodynamic characteristics of coastal and inland waters due to its invasive behaviour. Within the the research cooperation with partners from Belgium, France, Germany and Sweden, insights into the distribution, genetic characteristics and rheotactic behaviour of the neozoa shall be obtained. For this purpose, traps will be set up in all participating regions, which will be placed and operated in a manner adapted to the special local conditions. In this context, one focus of the IWD`s research is to investigate the rheotactic behaviour of the Chinese Mitten Crab in more detail in order to be able to identify e. g. preferred migration paths or hydraulic barriers for the crabs. The findings of all partners should lead to the development of management guidelines that can be applied across the North Sea region and beyond. In this regard, intensive cooperation with practitioners is crucial and is therefore also an essential component of the project.
