Abstract
The demand for renewable sources of energy is increasing every day. The use of nonrenewable
sources of energy is being phased out due to its negative environmental impacts.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to find alternative sources of energy. The water vortex
power plants, which is the objective of this study, are considered highly environmentally
friendly in nature. They also utilize quite low head in the range of 0.7 to 1 m and can be
installed in remote areas for electricity production. They are easy to install and due to their
simple design, the maintenance costs are considerably less. In this study an attempt has been
made to find the performance characteristics of the water vortex power plants. Firstly, a
detailed literature review has been conducted to study the past work done in the area. Next,
various companies which are operating in this field have been identified and plants which
have been built are briefly described. Furthermore, experiments are conducted on the vortex
power plant model. A set of parameters are varied to find the dominant parameters affecting
the efficiency of water vortex power plant. After conducting suitable experiments, an analysis
was done for finding the dependency of parameters on the water vortex power plant. A
performance curve is identified for the optimum generation of electrical power from this
power plant. Based on the results, recommendations have been made for increasing the
efficiency of the power plant. Suggestions have also been made for the future work that can
be done in this area.
