Abstract
Within the framework of the joint project In_StröHmunG, five model regions are examined by various institutions. One of them is the Zwönitz near Chemnitz in the district of Einsiedel in Saxony. As a result of 2002 flood event, flood protection measures were planned for the study area, which were designed based on 25 year flood discharge. The 2013 flood event showed that sediment deposits occurring in the investigation area in particular could endanger the achievement of this protection goal in the Einsiedel area. The excavation of these accumulations in order to maintain the flow capacity of the river is expensive. Certain measures need to be adopted in order to mitigate the sediment accumulation process or moving the present sediment deposits to a suitable extraction point where they are easier to excavate and lesser cost intensive. This study is an attempt at understanding the processes leading to sediment deposition in Zwönitz and investigating the compatibility of recommended sustainable structural measures in achieving a specific-flood-intensity-safe and ecologically sound flow condition through various simulations of different variants of measures with the help of hydraulic and sediment-transport modelling using SMS, HYDRO_AS-2D and HYDRO_FT-2D. As a result of these simulations it was observed that the groynes provide an ecologically sound structural measures which could be brought into usage to mitigate the deposition of sediments.
