Abstract
Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations can play a crucial role in modelling new designs of racing kayaks and in studying hydrodynamic effects for establishing improved and specially adapted models for the athletes anatomy and paddling ergonomics without material depletion. The aim of the thesis work was to estimate the workload for CFD simulation of the kayak using OpenFOAM. To this purpose a detailed literature study for achieving a good quality mesh was conducted. Further investigation into different meshing options available in OpenFOAM, along with their implementation, was performed. Different methods were determined to calculate the dynamic sinkage and trim of the given kayak model and an efficient procedure was chosen for further studies using CFD simulations. The results of the simulations are presented and explained. Additionally, a literature review on the effects of yaw motion on the hydrodynamic behaviour of the kayak was also carried out and the forces acting on the kayak were predicted. The main objective of the thesis work in estimating the workload and provide approaches for kayak design supported by high quality CFD simulation using OpenFOAM has been achieved.
