TEILPROJEKT 4 - Characterization of the material behavior of asphalt constituents as input to a meso-scale modelling of pavements

Research Area
Subproject 4 focuses on experimental characterization of asphalt and its constituents. The main goal is to characterize the fundamental properties of the materials, in dependence of traffic and temperature, as well as to develop appropriate modelling techniques to simulate the deformation and interaction of these materials in-service. Within this subproject several response measurements will done on both the asphalt itself and on the asphalt constituents (i.e. bitumen, mortar and mineral skeleton). The results of the experiments will be used to fit a continuum model developed within workpackage 1 and a meso-model developed in TP2. Furthermore, the retrieval of visco-elastic material model parameters is also one of the main tasks of TP4.
Goals
- Development of model-specific test procedures and evaluation methodologies.
- Validation and fine tuning of experimental stress regimes by iterative adjustments with the pavement response obtained in the numerical calculations of WP1 and WP2.
- Development of experimental test methods aimed at assessing material model parameters.
- Development a general understanding of the behavior of asphalt under the action of traffic loads and climatic conditions (temperature) through a comprehensive experimental program. In particular, investigate the influence of asphalt constituents on the overall material behavior.
