Olympia: Top sport and studies at the TU Dresden. Reception for the medalists Tina Punzel and Tom Liebscher
Two medal winners of the German Olympic team are studying at the Technical University of Dresden: the diver Tina Punzel economics and the canoeist Tom Liebscher traffic engineering. Both were honored for their sporting achievements in the rectorate of the TU Dresden. Therefor rector Prof. Staudinger and Canceler Dr. Handschuh warmly welcomed the students after the Olympic games back at the University and underlined the importance of the university support in sports. Everyone is happy about the great success of the Olympians.
In cooperation with the faculties of the TUD are always tried to find solutions for supporting athletes in their interests according to synchronise their sportive goals with the universal goals. Since the 2018/19 winter semester, the TU Dresden has also been one of the few universities in Germany to be awarding eight sports scholarships every year. "With this targeted help, the scholarship holders are to be given even better support in achieving their sporting and academic achievements," emphasizes the Chancellor, under whose patronage the sport scholarship is. In addition to the double burden of studying and training, there are often financial burdens from competition fees and sports equipment. In view of the already limited time, they cannot simply be compensated for with part-time jobs.

Students who are enrolled at the TU Dresden and who practice competitive sports parallel to their studies can apply. A prerequisite is good academic performance, which shows a successful course of study, coupled with excellent performance in sport, which must be proven at the level of membership of the state squad or comparable performance squad. In addition, social or community engagement or a commitment to university sports at the TU Dresden are desirable.
