THE sustainability ranking: TU Dresden is one of the world's best universities in the fields of industry, innovation and infrastructure
Sustainability is now also a topic in international university rankings. Based on the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, the renowned British magazine "Times Higher Education" has been examining the effectiveness of universities in these categories for the "THE Impact Ranking" annually since 2019. The universities are evaluated according to how much they contribute to the realization of these goals, e.g. through research projects, industrial cooperation, knowledge transfer into society, or study programs.
The TU Dresden took part in the ranking for the first time this year and was able to place itself among the top ten percent of universities worldwide with its contributions to the goal "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure" (SDG-9). 785 universities were rated in this category, with TUD taking 72nd place.
In the area of industry, innovation and infrastructure, the ranking records the research performance in fields that are considered important for sustainable effective innovations. It assesses how often research work at TU Dresden is cited in patents, how many start-ups are spun off, and how much third-party research funding the universities receive from the industry. Overall, the TU Dresden received 90 out of a possible 100 points.
This internationally very good rating continues the multiple award-winning research, third-party funding, and transfer strength of the TU Dresden. The "German Startup Monitor" from 2021 describes the cities of Dresden and Leipzig as very dynamic start-up locations, which is mainly due to the exceptionally good research landscape.
THE Impact Ranking
The annual Times Higher Education Rankings include the global overall, subject and reputation rankings, three regional rankings (Asia, Latin America and BRICS & Emerging Markets) and since 2019 the THE Impact Ranking, which are created using different indicators and weightings. Along with the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the QS World University Rankings, THE Rankings are among the most respected university rankings.
In 2022, 1524 universities took part in THE Impact Ranking. 1406 participated in the overall ranking. The others, like the TU Dresden, only work on a selected SDG. The number of participants is increasing rapidly.
