Forest utilization as a teaching field

The field of forest utilization was first clearly outlined in the second half of the 18th century by H. L. Du Hamal Du Monceau in his seminal work "De l`exploitation des bois" (Paris 1764). In Germany, Bechstein (1821) and Pfeil (1831) defined it even more precisely, and König (1851) and K. Gayer (1863) developed it as a subject and underpinned it by publishing self-contained textbooks. In the system of forest sciences, the treatment of the problems of the appropriate use of the forest is assigned to the teaching, research and knowledge area of forest (utilization). This includes the technology of proper harvesting and transportation of forest products - primarily logs - (task of the Chair of Forest Technology at the Department of Forest Sciences), the determination of the properties of forest products, especially hardwood and softwood (wood science), the storage and sorting of raw wood (wood utilization) as well as information on its best possible use (wood utilization).
