DendroLab
How do trees grow? How may forests cope with contemporary changes in climate? How did the forest look like in former times? In the tree-ring lab DendroLab, such questions are addressed using tree-ring based methods. Study materials include recent and historical wood as well as historical charcoal.
Tree rings: the archive of trees
Tree-ring parameters like ring width or wood anatomical features provide deep insight in tree functioning and growth, which is crucial in assessing potential impacts of climate change on forest ecosystems. By exploring the tree-ring archive, research projects running at DendroLab can therefore contribute to designing climate-resilient forests for the future. As tree-ring and wood anatomical characteristics are well preserved in subfossil wood and historic charcoal as well, our tree-ring based and so-called anthracological studies furthermore contribute to reconstructing forest composition and dynamics in the past.
