How are ethnicity and gentrification intertwined? New paper published in Fennia

The Junior Professorship for Sustainable Urban Futures has published a new paper titled Ethnicity and gentrification. Exploring the real estate's perspective on the revaluation of a 'dangerous' street in Leipzig (Germany).

The study addresses a research gap in German-speaking countries, where ethnicity in the context of gentrification has so far only been discussed in Berlin.

The text addresses the paradoxical role of ethnicity on Leipzig's Eisenbahnstraße. The international atmosphere in the neighborhood attracts new social groups that are associated with gentrification processes. At the same time, ethnicity is constructed as an "obstacle" to urban development by those involved in the real estate industry. In this context, displacement processes are justified under the guise of "social mix".

The article is published open access in Fennia - International Journal of Geography. The Finnish journal is listed in the Web of Science with an impact factor of 1.176.
