Objectives
The aim of the project is to analyse Costa Rica’s water-related challenges, taking into account climate change and urbanisation, and to identify adaptation strategies against water scarcity. The main focus will be on the salinisation of coastal aquifers in the Santa Cruz district and water scarcity in Pacific island communities. The understanding of the biophysical and socio-economic aspects of both case studies will be the main focus in order to assess the possibility of implementing robust, sustainable adaptation measures. This includes strengthening the cooperation of German and Costa Rican stakeholders, a better understanding of the main drivers of local water scarcity through literature studies, collection of available hydrological data, assessment of demand and seasonal availability of water resources, and identification of sustainable adaptation options to reduce water scarcity. To achieve these goals, the project includes five work packages:
- Examination of the current situation and assessment of the possible implementation of adaptation strategies for sustainable water management in Costa Rica.
- Promoting environmentally friendly technologies through workshops and training.
- Increase environmental awareness and establishing a regional expert panel on sustainable water management.
- Preparation of a joint research project to ensure seasonal water availability especially in coastal regions (saltwater intrusion) and island communities (water scarcity).
- Academic exchange for German and Costa Rican students and scientists.
The measures are primarily aimed at strengthening and consolidating the international cooperation of the participating actors from both partner countries in order to initiate and expand future research cooperation.
