Nomination for the IHK Research Transfer Award 2018
The Chair of Vehicle Mechatronics is nominated for the IHK Research Transfer Award 2018 with the project Cem²S.
In this cooperation project with the Rex industrial products Graf von Rex GmbH, Vellberg and the Chair of Vehicle Mechatronics of the Technische Universität Dresden, industrial friction coatings were cost-effectively transformed into smart sensors in rotating Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems.
Brake linings within industrial safety brakes are safety-relevant components that require high reliability and robustness. This applies equally to the Internet-of-Mechatronics (IoM) system Smart Rotor created in the project. In the past, only a few physical variables and only at great expense could be determined, such as temperature and wear. With the integrated, innovative electronics the component was upgraded with, additionally vibration, positioning, function and friction speed of the electromagnetic safety brake can be queried without contact via the established standard Bluetooth LE. In addition, an associated networked IoM gateway makes this data available globally via a cloud-based backend, and can be used for downstream analysis and to derive characteristics (predictive diagnostics).
The IIoT system can also be kept up-to-date with software-over-the-air (OTA) updates and the software can be extended (Function-on-Demand), which represents a constant evolution of the system to maximize the runtime of the smart machine. Another practical advantage is the cost-effective modernization of older systems by replacing the rotors and, in the context of Industry 4.0, to expand it into a smart machine as part of a smart factory.
The project partners of the cooperation project Cem²S developed an innovative manufacturing process, during which the necessary sensors and the system-on-chip are incorporated into the material of the brake linings and which has a hermetic encapsulation against environmental influences during operation and thus open up and extends a multitude of new application fields.
The award ceremony will take place on June 18, 2018 in Heilbronn. Further information can be found here.
