The compulsory module "Wissenschaftliches und Praktisches Arbeiten" conveys the basics of data research and the writing of scientific papers to the students. The acquired skills serve as basis for the participation in the module "Bachelor Seminar". The allocation of students to our chair is made by the dean's office. The processing of topics offered is done in two-person teams.
Process
The topics of the WPA seminar are set by the chair. The students who are assigned to our chair can enroll in OPAL for a topic. By choosing the theme the teambuilding is done at the same time, i. e. the participants who sign up for a topic work together in a two-person team on the chosen theme!
For the implementation of the WPA seminar in the current winter term the following general schedule has been determined:
Sequential Step |

In this phase, the team will collaboratively prepare their own seminar topic as a research tree based on Tranfield et al. (2003) and present it to the other participants (5 minutes presentation, 5 minutes discussion), following Fink's approach (2014). Furthermore, each participant in the research seminar will be assigned a methodology or a problem/topic typically addressed in academic publications. They will present this methodology topic in a brief presentation (5 minutes presentation, 5 minutes discussion) to facilitate understanding of reading scientific publications and their methodologies. Both presentations contribute to the evaluation of the research seminar. Additional helpful information regarding the methodology presentation can be found in this Video from a previous session.

A mandatory requirement for master and diploma theses is the successful completion of the corresponding research seminar of the chair. Topics will be assigned upon request, after the appropriate research seminar was successfully completed at our chair. Therefore, please refrain from inquiries for the list of topics before submitting your application.
Application Process
A new application after the successful completion of the master and diploma research seminar is not required. For application modalities for the research seminar please have a look at the top of this page.
Feel free to suggest a self-designed theme for your final thesis, a topic in cooperation with technical chairs or a topic in cooperation with a company. However, in this case we need (in addition to the usual documents) an exposé, which has to be attached to your application. This exposé should make clear how the issue fits to the research profile of the chair and which research gap can be closed thanks to the processing of this topic. For this purpose you should occupy yourself on 2 - 3 pages with the current state of research and the contribution of your work to this research, with the planned procedure and the structure of the work. For this you should try to use high-quality literature, i. e. mainly essays published in international magazines. The quality of the magazines can be specified by various rankings, e. g. the VHB-Ranking.
