Kolloquium: Wijand Veeneman (TU Delft) "Transitioning Infrastructures: how to change the way we decide on our network to take them into the future"

Abstract:
The main story of the talk is how we need to a much higher degree of integration of sectors when making decisions on infrastructure. A key example is the way in which energy and mobility and also data infrastructures are more interdependent than ever. That is very poorly represented in the way that we make decisions on mobility (or even more specifically various modes of transport) and energy (or even various modes of energy production and delivery. The “Energie Wende” in Europe seems to be a wide set of unconnected decisions with clear system interdependencies.

I will present the way that we in The Netherlands seek to take a system-of-systems approach in analysis and governance, focusing on regional and national integration of understanding of and deciding on infrastructure systems, like rails, roads, energy, drinking water and more. How do you do justice to the hosts of interdependencies when preparing the infrastructures to transition with society to a more sustainable future. 

About Wijnand Veeneman:
Dr. W.W. (Wijnand) Veeneman is an Associate professor of Organisation and Management at Delft University of Technology. Wijnand Veeneman and his PhD’s are researching and teaching institutions and governance of complexity in infrastructure sectors, in particular public transport. He is leading a European project on the governance data platforms for mobility. He is scientific director of Next Generation Infrastructure, a cooperation between six major infrastructure managers in the Netherlands. He is member of TRAIL research school, the advisory council of Netherlands Institute of Government, and the editorial board of Tijdschrift Vervoerswetenschap. He has edited special issues for Sustainability and the International Journal of Public Policy.

Wijnand Veeneman’s presentation will also feature within the “Spring Colloquium” of the Boysen-TU Dresden-Research Training Group ‘Mobility in Transition’ which will take on the 25 and 26 April.
