CCI4EU - Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures for Europe
Background
The new EU project "Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructure for the European Union" (CCI4EU), which is funded within the Horizon Europe Mission Cancer, was launched on May 1st 2023. The project is coordinated by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). The project network consists of 55 partners from 27 EU Member States and 4 associated countries, including major European cancer organisations and cancer centres. The project has a duration of 36 months. The CCI4EU kick-off meeting took place in May 2023 in Milan.
Within Europe, cancer is the second leading cause of death - with an increasing trend, as about 25% more deaths are expected by 2035. There are still significant differences in access to innovative, high-quality cancer care both between and within European Member States. It is therefore essential to continuously improve the integration of care, research and education.
Objective
The Horizon Europe Mission Cancer contributes to the establishment of an EU-wide network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres in the EU Member States, which is to be set up by 2025 as part of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. The mission aims to achieve the goal of 90% of all cancer patients having access to Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures (CCIs) by 2030. In this context, ttailored Capacity Building Programmes (CBPs) for the (further) development of the CCIs of the EU member states are to be developed and tested.
The overall objectives of CCI4EU are:
- Support EU member states and associated countries in developing or improving existing or future Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures
- Foster research innovation and digital capacity development in cancer care
- Ensure that 90% of cancer patients are treated in CCIs by 2030 (according to one of the four key action areas of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan)
There is a close cooperation with the other running EU projects UNCAN, CraNE, JANE und ECHOS.
Our Role in the CCI4EU
The Research Group Digital Health, in collaboration with the German Cancer Society and the Karolinska Institute, will develop and implement a CCI maturity model as task of the work package 2 "Definition of Criteria für Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures (CCIs) using a Maturity Model". This model will assess the current maturity level in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and care in order to develop and implement tailored capacity building programs for the (further) development of cancer infrastructures in EU member states. The maturity model plays a central role in the project and is represented in almost all work packages, serving as "the golden thread of the CCI4EU project." We will deploy a digital maturity model web tool to allow for data collection and maturity assessment.
In addition, the Research Group Digital Health is responsible for the development of the Data Management Plan for the entire project - an important and mandatory EU deliverable.
