GATEKEEPER - Smart Living Homes
Background
The increasing socio-demographic change is causing an elder population in Europe. There is a lack of resources to maintain this shift in European Health Systems, which causes an inevitable unsustainability of the health systems. At the same time, stakeholders in the healthcare sector are fragmented. Doctors have problems that companies cannot solve while patients are affected by this situation. Since there are often no adequate ways of integrated and home care, treatment usually ends in the hospital. In terms of technology, there are no standards for the provision of IoT services in the health and care sector. In connection with the lack of interoperability in this sector, it is quite complex to connect the needs of the different actors and to build on them.
As part of the HORIZON 2020 program, the GATEKEEPER project, financed with 21.3 million Euros, was officially started on October 25 in Madrid. The initiative is coordinated by Medtronic Ibérica and comprises 43 partners, which are spread across health technology companies, research institutes or large universities, healthcare providers and networks for technological innovations. During a 42-month work plan, the project will be expanded to provide solutions involving around 40,000 older citizens on the supply and demand side (authorities, institutions, companies, associations, universities) in 8 regional communities from 7 EU member states are.
Objectives
GATEKEEPER is a large European multi-center pilot for living environments intelligently supported by technology.
The main goal of GATEKEEPER is to enable the creation of a platform that connects healthcare providers, businesses and the elderly with the communities in which they live. The platform should serve to enable an open, trust-based coordination of technologies, user requirements and processes. This is done with the aim of enabling the aging population to live a healthier, independent life. GATEKEEPER will be included in an interoperable and secure open source framework based on European standards. It is available to all developers to create combined digital solutions for personalized early detection and health intervention. The scope of GATEKEEPER is the application of advanced information and communication technologies (ICT) to meet the challenge of improving the quality of life for citizens while demonstrating its significant efficiency gains in health and car delivery across Europe.
The achievement of the overall goal, the creation of the platform, is supported by the following specific goals:
Provision of the GATEKEEPER DIGITAL PLATFORM
- Fault tolerant, secure, flexible and scalable micro service infrastructure
- Includes services that are adapted to generally accepted standards such as HL7-FHIR or SAREF
Provision of the GATEKEEPER HEALTHCARE SPACE
- intuitive and self-configuring dashboards
- Services for care plans and early risk identification
- Compound data infrastructure for healthcare professionals
Provision of the GATEKEEPER CONSUMER SPACE
- Certified solutions, services and devices are provided to citizens
- Management and prevention of health and social risks
Provision of the GATEKEEPER BUSINESS SPACE
- Companies, alone or in partnership, can develop solutions, services and devices according to standards

- integrates healthcare elements, real world data and health technology assessment
- involves relevant actors inside and outside the consortium
- supports the worldwide dissemination of project activities and successes
Role of our research group:
The Chair of Wirtschaftsinformatik, especially Systems Development is part of the Saxon pilot region and supports the implementation of the customized GATEKEEPER solution on site. HeLiCT helps to define and implement the activities of the Large Scale Pilot (LSP) of the Saxon pilot region. At the same time, HeLiCT supports the establishment and the consolidation of various use cases in order to enable the use of digital solutions for early detection and intervention and to identify and mitigate health risks for the aging population at an early stage. HeLiCT also helps to design use cases for early detection and interventions, and to ensure that they consistently meet the goals of the GATEKEEPER project and have high scientific standards.
