Responsible use of educational data: Erasmus+ project SCHOOLWISE launched
The Erasmus+ project SCHOOLWISE was officially launched with a kick-off meeting in Santa Margherita Ligure (Italy). At the meeting at the end of March 2026, partner institutions (universities, NGOs, schools, stakeholders from the legal sector) from eight European countries came together to begin the content and organizational cooperation in the project.
At the heart of SCHOOLWISE is a fundamental question of digital transformation in the education system: how can data-based approaches be used to improve teaching and learning without jeopardizing the rights of students? Accordingly, the project focuses on the responsible use of educational data, the development of sustainable governance structures and the anchoring of ethical principles in school contexts.
During the kick-off meeting, key foundations were laid for further collaboration. These include the development of a common content orientation, initial guidelines for data protection and ethical governance as well as the conception of practice-oriented tools and training formats for teachers and school administrators. In addition, pilot activities were prepared that are to be implemented in various European countries as the project progresses.
Central focus of the project: data use, governance and skills
Over the next three years, SCHOOLWISE will work towards supporting schools in the reflective and responsible use of data. This involves both the further development of data-based teaching and learning processes and the development of corresponding skills among school stakeholders. A guiding principle is the priority of pupils' rights over commercial interests.
The project is supported by a European consortium under the coordination of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy). On the TU Dresden side, the Center for Open Digital Innovation and Participation (CODIP) at CIDS is significantly involved in the implementation and content design of the project.
CODIP plays a central role in the development of practical tools and training courses for schools. Based on the conceptual foundations developed in the project, open toolkits, assessment modules and further training courses for teachers and school administrators are created in cooperation with European education partners, which are then tested, evaluated and further developed in schools in several EU partner countries.
SCHOOLWISE aims to support schools not only in using data, but also in shaping and managing it responsibly.
