Excellent Research Environment
Space for Ideas
The home of CRTD is a state-of-the-art building with 6.900 square meters of laboratories, offices, auditorium and seminar rooms, constructed adjacent to the BioInnovationCenter in Dresden Johannstadt at a cost of 48.6 million EUR. The CRTD building offers space for scientific research, education, science communication, public outreach, and other activities.
Our Network
The CRTD is set up as an interdisciplinary and interconnected network of 21 core research groups in the research institute and an extensive network of principal investigators from other research institutes in Dresden. Together withB CUBE and BIOTEC it is embedded in the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB), which focuses on interdisciplinary research and teaching in life sciences scientific integration and synergy within the Johannstadt campus. The three institutes are facilitated by the close proximity of participating institutes, such as the MPI-CBG or the Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden.
State-of-the-art technology for cutting-edge research
Our scientists utilize technologies and services made available within the CRTD network. Cutting-edge technologies are offered centrally to all scientists in the CRTD community through the CMCB Technology Platform. Here you can find more information about the individual facilities of our technology platform.
Career Opportunities
Tenure Track Option
CRTD has pioneered the introduction of Tenure Track at the TU Dresden and in the Free State of Saxony. Tenure Track option is an important factor for recruiting and supporting top-level young scientists. All junior groups are established for a duration of six years. After four years of probation the junior group leaders have the chance to proceed to a tenure track evaluation based on the Tenure Track regulations of TU Dresden. Provided the evaluation is completed successfully, candidates are able to undergo an appointment procedure for a permanent W2 professorship.
Mentoring Program
CRTD offers a mentorship program for Junior Research Group Leaders (JGL). Upon taking up their employment at CRTD, all JGL have the option of choosing a senior mentor to guide them through the process of establishing an independent research group and to advise them on development and career options.
Postdoctoral Staff
At CRTD, postdocs have access to a program aimed at supporting them in their personal and professional development. Besides conducting research in a stimulating and vibrant environment, they have access to a wide range of training offers carries out by the Graduate Academy and the Center for Continuing Education.
Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering
(DIGS-BB)
The Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB) is a structured PhD program by the Technische Universität Dresden, embedded in a vibrant, collaborative and international community. The DIGS-BB offers PhD positions in world-class interdisciplinary research projects, accompanied by expert mentoring and a training curriculum that supports both scientific and personal development.
Bioscience PhD Students (BiPS)
PhD students at the CRTD may be independently employed by a professor or a group leader. Collectively, all independently employed students are referred to as Bioscience PhD Students (BiPS).
BiPS students have the advantage of accessing Technische Universität Dresden and CRTD research communities, international networks, and facilities, while completing a PhD. They have access to the extensive offers by the TUD Graduate Academy (membership required) and will be supported throughout their PhD
by a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC).
Training for Administrative and Technical Staff
Our administrative and technical employees have the opportunity to attend trainings offered by the Fortbildungszentrum des Freistaates Sachsen in Meißen, the Technische Universität Dresden (e.g. SprInt program) or other suitable institutions.
Internationality
International Employees
Top scientists from around 30 different nations work within the 21 core research groups at the CRTD. Around 40% of our staff, and nearly 60% of CRTD researchers, are from outside Germany.
Events at CRTD
This international work environment creates the framework for various events at the CRTD. International conferences (such as the annual CRTD Summer Conference), external seminars (e.g. CMCB Life Sciences Semiar Series with international guest speakers) and scientific symposia (latest breakthroughs from the research areas) offer numerous opportunities for scientific exchange.
Of course, we are also involved in public outreach and want the public to find out more about our research activities. Therefore, we have been participating in the annual Dresden Long Night of Science since 2007 and were able to attract an increasing number of curious people each year (more than 2000 in 2019). We also take part in other events, such as the European Stem Cell Day in Germany or the Maus Türöffner-Tag (the Mouse is the main character of a beloved German children’s program featuring a mix of humorous and educational segments).
