Our Flow Cytometry Core Facility is often called the FACS Facility, even though Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting is just one specialized application of flow cytometry. So, what is flow cytometry?
cyto = cell, metry = measurement, flow = cell suspension in motion
Flow cytometry measures the physicochemical properties of single cells or other (biological) particles while they are in a fluid stream and pass, one by one, laser light in the flow cytometer.
In other words, a flow cytometer is a type of automated fluorescence microscope that measures the intracellular and extracellular characteristics of cells using scattered light and fluorochrome labeling.
The members of our CMCB flow cytometry team have at least 10 years of experience in the field of flow cytometric analysis and sorting of various cell types of different origin.
