Conference: Mechanismen des Innovativen im klösterlichen Leben des hohen Mittelalters

Anyone researching the lasting new, i.e. asking about the innovative that transcends system boundaries, can hardly avoid the monasteries of the 12th and 13th centuries in the Middle Ages. Consciously or by chance, monastic culture opened up areas of the first and the unknown, in which experience had to be gained in order to handle what had been innovatively acquired. Among other things, beacons of technical progress, a new type of statute law, regulated procedures or effective ritual solutions supported by creative hybrid models emerged.

Tensions have always generated creativity, and it seems that monastic culture, with its ambivalences of transcendence and immanence, inside and outside, individual and community, priesthood and laity or poverty and wealth, is particularly suited to function as such a multiplex "innovation laboratory of European life designs and models of order".

Our conference looks for the key to understanding its innovation potential and mechanisms in this creative world. This means that all papers are derived from the question of how and in which systemic contexts innovations functioned in the monastic life of the high Middle Ages, i.e. why and how they emerged and how they were promoted, supported, communicated or inhibited.
