Innovative and excellent: Research at TU Dresden

Research Priority Areas

Research at TU Dresden focuses on five strategic Research Priority Areas. These represent the currently strongest research fields of our university, which are characterised by a high publication output and third-party funded activities. Three Clusters of Excellence and various Collaborative Research Centres contribute to the research excellence of TU Dresden.

Excellence

Since 2012, TU Dresden has been one of eleven German Universities of Excellence. With two Clusters of Excellence, the DIGS-BB Graduate School and its Institutional Strategy, TU Dresden was successful in the Excellence Initiative in 2012. In 2018, a further three Clusters of Excellence were approved as part of the successor programme to the Excellence Initiative - the Excellence Strategy.

Research Profile Determining Projects

TU Dresden is characterised by a high volume of third-party funding. Projects that are shaping the profile of TUD play a major part in third-party funded research. These include projects in the framework of the Excellence Initiative, DFG coordinated projects (CRCs, Research Training Groups), as well as major projects of the EU and the federal and local governments.

Research Profile of TU Dresden

TU Dresden is a university with a broad spectrum of degree programmes and a strong focus on the engineering and natural sciences. Research at TU Dresden revolves around five interdisciplinary Research Priority Areas (RPAs):

The Research Priority Areas (RPAs) represent our university’s strongest research fields. The focus of the RPAs include the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life (PoL), the Graduate School DIGS-BB and the Research Cluster CRTD in Biomedicine and Life Sciences as well as on the Clusters of Excellence CeTI, the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat and the Research Cluster cfaed in Microelectronics and Materials Science. In addition, there are numerous research projects such as the Collaborative Research Centres, Graduate Schools and joint projects that shape the profile of TUD and are third-party funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German federal government and the Länder, the European Union and the industry.

The Directorate Research as well as the Project Scouts support TUD scientists through various measures with the realisation of research projects and with the application process.

The key to the exceptional quality of TU Dresden’s research profile is ingrained in the close collaboration with non-university research institutions and Dresden-based cultural institutions as part of the DRESDEN-concept research alliance.

TU Dresden's Clusters of Excellence

CeTI

The “Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop” (CeTI) of TU Dresden aims to catapult the cooperation between man and machine to new heights. In the future, people should be able to interact in real time with interconnected, automated systems in both the real and virtual worlds. At the Cluster of Excellence CeTI, scientists from the fields of electrical engineering, communication technology, computer science, psychology, neuroscience and medicine are working together with researchers from TU Munich, the German Aerospace Center, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, as well as international scientific institutions, to pursue this goal.

PoL

The central aim of the Cluster of Excellence ’Physics of Life’ is to unite Physics with Biology to identify principles that govern the dynamic organization of living matter. Our ambition is to understand living systems as physical systems where spatiotemporal structure emerges robustly through energy and matter flows. This will broaden the scope of non-equilibrium physics and the physics of living matter, and will unravel new paradigms for understanding life.

ct.qmat

Novel materials with tailored functionalities are the basis for progress in virtually all areas of modern technology. The Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat places emphasis on quantum mechanisms on the atomic scale, which, in conjunction with topological physics and the chemical and physical complexities, reveals hitherto unprecedented properties and phenomena. The cluster unites physicists, chemists, and material scientists in their efforts to understand, control, and apply fundamentally new states of quantum matter in novel materials.
