JPI Oceans launches Call 2026 on “Blue Carbon Ecosystems“!
Blue Carbon Ecosystems
JPI Oceans has launched a joint call on "Blue Carbon" to better understand the role these ecosystems play in climate change mitigation, adaptation to climate change and biodiversity conservation.
Seven partner organizations have made 5.3 million euros available for the call.
Blue carbon ecosystems - including salt marshes, seagrass beds, mangroves and, increasingly, non-vegetated systems such as macroalgae, mudflats and the water column - are crucial for storing carbon and therefore contribute to regulating the global climate.
Their conservation and restoration not only mitigates climate change, but also offers additional benefits: they strengthen the resilience of ecosystems, protect biodiversity and support the adaptation of coastal areas.
The joint call supports projects that address one or more of the following topics:
- 1. carbon pools and fluxes at local and regional scales, including the climate change mitigation effect of CO₂ as well as relevant other greenhouse gases such as methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O).
- 2. resilience and vulnerability of blue carbon ecosystems to climate change, eutrophication, dredging, bottom trawling, tourism and other human impacts
- 3. effectiveness and transferability of conservation and restoration measures, including nature-based solutions.
Projects should generate knowledge that contributes to several of the following:
- Scientific data and modeling on carbon and greenhouse gas fluxes
- Standardized methods and calibration protocols to better compare ecosystems
- Policy-relevant recommendations, including best practices for restoration and protection
- Contributions to national and European planning and reporting obligations
- Knowledge products for authorities and other stakeholders
Project proposals should:
- Be clearly associated with one or more of the above topics
- Describe how they contribute to the expected outcomes
- Demonstrate their relevance to European or national policy frameworks
- Include a plan for stakeholder engagement and knowledge transfer
- Demonstrate how the results support sustainable management
Timeline and funding conditions:
- March 02, 2026 - submission of full proposal
- Collaborative projects with at least 3 partners from 3 participating countries
- Associated partners with self-financing possible
- Max. 500,000 EUR German funding per project
Participating countries:
Germany, Greece, Ireland, Canada, Malta, Norway, Poland
