Franz Stolze Prize
Each year, the Franz Stolze Prize is awarded to students and young researchers at TU Dresden who have written outstanding final theses in the field of energy technology.
The Berlin-born engineer Dr. Franz Stolze was the inventor of the gas turbine – a construction design that is still used today for energy, propulsion and process technology and is considered indispensable in the transition to green energy. In 1873, Franz Stolze first described his single-shaft “fire turbine.” Initially, he was denied a patent for it. Twenty-four years later, he was granted a patent for his “hot air machine,” whose main difference to the previous invention was its name. This invention featured a multi-stage axial compressor, a centrally positioned hot air generator and a multi-stage axial turbine. Franz Solze’s design and his attempt to bring it to life with the “Weißensee” test gas turbine laid the groundwork for the gas turbine technology of today. The prize which bears his name was first awarded at TU Dresden in 2010.
Prize Money
The prize money amounting to 1,500 euros is funded by Dr. Manfred Freimark and Gudrun Stolze. If two works are deemed worthy of the award, the prize money is divided up into sums of 1,000 euros and 500 euros.
The Jury
The jury that assesses the submissions comprises the donor, Dr. Freimark, university professors and lecturers from the relevant subject areas and a representative of the University Executive Board.
Award Ceremony
The award ceremony for the Franz Stolze Prize takes place in the winners’ faculty.
Applications
The works should have been completed and successfully defended between April of the previous year and the submission deadline at the end of April of the current year. Please send nominations along with an expert opinion on the work to the University Executive Board, Office of the Rector / Academic Committees. The application deadline is April 30th of each year.
