The areas of our university that are currently strongest in research have been brought together in three strategic areas of excellence. These include the five Clusters of Excellence as well as numerous Collaborative Research Centers and Research Training Groups. They are all characterized by high publication output and third-party funding activities.

Excellence

Since 2012, TU Dresden has been one of the eleven German Universities of Excellence and is one of the leading and most dynamic research institutions in Germany. This Excellence status has initiated a dynamic change process at TUD. The university has become even more interdisciplinary and international, attracting outstanding researchers from all over the world. At the same time, this award means a great responsibility and is an incentive to continue to be excellent.

Research Profile Determining Projects

TU Dresden is characterised by a high volume of third-party funding. Projects that are shaping the profile of TUD play a major part in third-party funded research. These include projects in the framework of the Excellence Initiative, DFG coordinated projects (CRCs, Research Training Groups), as well as major projects of the EU and the federal and local governments.

Our research ranges from ground-breaking fundamental research to application-oriented projects with transfer relevance. The university’s strongest research fields are concentrated in three strategic areas of excellence:

The focus of the areas include the five Clusters of Excellence CARE (with RWTH Aachen), REC2, CeTI, ctd.qmat (with Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) und PoL. In addition, there are numerous research projects such as the Collaborative Research Centres, Graduate Schools and joint projects that shape the profile of TUD and are third-party funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German federal government and the Länder, the European Union and the industry.

The Directorate Research as well as the Project Scouts support TUD scientists through various measures with the realisation of research projects and with the application process.

The key to the exceptional quality of TU Dresden’s research profile is ingrained in the close collaboration with non-university research institutions and Dresden-based cultural institutions as part of the DRESDEN-concept research alliance.
