#courage2018 // SEHEN!Nathan der Weise
01099 Dresden
SEE! - Event as part of the cultural programme of #courage2018
At the end of the 12th century. At the time of the Third Crusade in Jerusalem: Many years ago the Jewish merchant Nathan was entrusted with a Christian girl, whom he raised as his daughter Recha. Nobody knows about it, except for the Christian Daja, who lives in Nathan's house. When Nathan returns from a business trip, he learns that his house has burned to the ground. Recha would almost have died in the flames if she had not be saved by a young templar. The knight templar, in turn, was pardoned shortly before by Sultan Saladin. Saladin, who seeks a lender for his empty coffers, lets Nathan come to him and asks him which of the three religions is best. The issue of tolerance is still current, the play "Nathan der Weise" pushes back into many schedules.
In 1779, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing called his Nathan "a dramatic poem" answering a question that was heavily debated in his time: it was about the claim to absoluteness of the Christian religion and the question of the true religion. In the play, wise Nathan responds to Saladin's question with the famous "Ring Parable". Unfortunately, the question about the right religion has become again a current and aggressively led discussion and even today we can not reflect enough on humanity.
With English and Arabic supertitles.
