    Professor Orit Halpern

In the monthly "University-Wide Inaugural Lecture", TU Dresden publicly introduces newly appointed professors from various disciplines every third Thursday during lecture period and welcomes anyone interested.

On October 13, sociologist and anthropologist Prof. Orit Halpern will give an insight into her research. Since 2021, she has held the key professorship "Digital Cultures" at the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies at TU Dresden, as well as being the spokesperson for the TUDiSC concept group.

Her academic career has taken this versatile top American researcher to Duke University (USA), the Milieux Institute at Concordia University (Canada), and Harvard University (USA), among others. Honors such as leadership of the Speculative Life Research Clusters (Milieux Institute), membership in the World Economic Forum (Frontier Risk Working Group), the Advisor title of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, Artificial Intelligence in Security and Humanitarian Aid Working Group or membership in the Advisory Board Operational Images Research Group, (Czech Science Foundation) underline Halpern's commitment.
In her inaugural lecture, "The Smartness Mandate: Re-imagining our Technological Future," she discusses historically and ethnographically how and why the principle of "smart" technologies has entered our everyday lives. In addition to the changes that digitization has had on our understanding of nature, culture, time, and the future, Prof. Halpern considers "smart" approaches from the humanities and natural sciences that can help solve world-changing problems.

The lecture is given in English and will be accompanied by a reception that will provide an opportunity to interact with Prof. Halpern.
