ForUS – the University School Research Unit at TU Dresden founded for the school of the future
The new University School Research Unit (abbreviated to ForUS from the German Forschungsstelle Universitätsschule) has been founded at TU Dresden. With this new expansion, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences gains an interdisciplinary academic unit for developing and designing the University School Dresden pilot project. The highly ambitious project enables excellent education research in a school pilot project that is the only one of its kind in Germany. The interdisciplinary Board of Directors and the Advisory Board are supported by the Structuring and Evaluation Commission. This commission was founded in 2020 and is comprised of renowned education researchers from the German-speaking world. The 2nd commission report has just been published.
A support structure for the co-constructive process between school practice and research
The initiator of the pilot project, Prof. Anke Langner, has been appointed director. For the Chair of Education / Inclusive Education at TU Dresden, the Research Unit is “a point of connection for the University School Dresden as a place of formative education research that will hopefully contribute to interdisciplinary cooperation.”
The Research Unit supports project planning in school development research, teaching research, professionalization and attitude research, learning and development research, and applied digital education sciences as well as transdisciplinary cooperation. Such cooperation already exists with the Institute of Work and Organizational Psychology and the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Industrial Management, at the Faculty of Business and Economics.
The Research Unit’s work is exclusively financed by third-party funding.
Prof. Anke Langner is supported by two deputies and the members of the Advisory Board. Prof. Alexander Lasch, Professor of German Linguistics and Language History and First Deputy to the Director, is devoted to the exploration and machine analysis of digital humanities. He describes the potential of collaborative endeavors as follows: “The University School provides researchers and teachers of various subjects the opportunity to inspect routine school education under the microscope. With the support of ForUS, unique projects can be realized together with pupils and teachers at the University School Dresden.”
The second deputy to the Managing Director, Prof. Sebastian Pannasch from the Chair of Engineering Psychology and Applied Cognitive Research, contributes his expertise in organization development, amongst other assets. “In addition to fundamental issues of how to shape the learning process, digitalization plays an ever increasing role – in particular with regard to classroom learning. To guarantee the support of digital tools in school settings, we first have to check which methods and forms of technology truly promote learning – especially in combination with conventional teaching and learning methods.”
Functions of the Advisory Board as well as the Structuring and Evaluation Commission
University School Principal Maxi Heß, Chairman of the School Prof. Christian Prunitsch, Director of the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research (ZLSB) Prof. Axel Gehrmann, and TUD Data Protection Officer Jens Syckor are all dedicated members of the Advisory Board. Their work focuses on the transfer of research findings to teacher training in general and on integrating the Research Unit in the practical training of TU Dresden students studying to become teachers at the University School Dresden in particular.
The Structuring and Evaluation Commission compiles and shares experiences from accompanying research at laboratory and university schools in the German-speaking world to provide guidance in implementing these research projects. The commission comprised of renowned education researchers and practitioners was founded in 2020 to support the pilot project and has now been incorporated into the Research Unit.
The regulations of the Research Unit for the University School Dresden pilot project as well as an overview of the Structuring and Evaluation commission members and reports are published on the TUD project website: www.tu-dresden.de/gsw/unischule/forschung-an-der-universitaetsschule.
