Center for Constitutional and Democratic Research (ZVD)
The Center for Constitutional and Democratic Research is an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to fostering ongoing academic exchange between the fields of law, history, social sciences, and political science, and to strengthening international networks.
The ZVD’s core research areas include the role of the constitution as a medium and point of reference for social integration, the transformation of democratic constitutional orders in the context of 21st-century global society, the diverse constitutional cultures of Europe, and the forms of future constitutional arrangements in regional and transnational spaces.

JoDDiD
The John Dewey Research Center for the Didactics of Democracy (JoDDiD for short) sees itself as a center of innovation in the field of political education. It brings together expertise from subject-specific pedagogical research, consulting, training and continuing education, art, museum, and theater education, as well as political and democratic education.
The focus of its work is primarily on the field of out-of-school political education for youth and adults. To this end, new formats, methods, and educational concepts are to be researched, further developed, and brought to the forefront. JoDDiD supports Saxon stakeholders in out-of-school education in the preparation, development, and reflective evaluation of political education programs against the backdrop of a challenging social situation.

The research center is enshrined in Saxony’s coalition agreement and is funded by the Free State of Saxony.

MIDEM
The Mercator Forum for Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) investigates how migration shapes democratic policies, institutions, and cultures—and, in turn, is shaped by them. It examines the forms, instruments, and processes through which migration is politically addressed in democratic societies. Of particular interest are society’s perceptions of migration and the resulting fault lines or potential coping strategies.
Four interdisciplinary research groups address the following topics:
- Belonging, Identity, and Cohesion
- Political and Social Polarization
- National governance of migration
- Local governance of migration
