Workshop "Statutes of Hospitaller Orders and Statutes of Hospitals in European Comparison (12th to 18th Century)", Dresden, March 24-26, 2025
Since August 2022, the project "Normative Order and Symbolic Presence of the Antonites. Edition of their Statutes and Analysis of their Signs" works as part of the Dresden Research Center for Comparative History of Religious Orders (FOVOG). Its primary goal is the first-ever edition of the entire surviving material of the medieval statutes of the Antonites, namely those from the years 1367, 1420 and 1478. As self-imposed proper law, these texts can provide information in a special way about the hitherto almost unknown constitutional structure of the Antonites and thus shed light on the normative foundations of a community that was networked throughout Europe and, despite its local location, always acted supraregionally.
The workshop aims to present the results of the project, whereby the statutes of the Antonites will be compared with those of other Hospitaller communities. The comparison, in particular with the Hospitallers of the Holy Spirit as a community active at the same time, should help to evaluate and classify the research results for the Antonites. The statutes of individual houses and hospitals from different regions will also be included in the discussion in order to provide a differentiated view of the context of hospital practice.
