Recognition of Academic Achievements
The stay abroad broadens your horizon - but it also should have some practical use for your studies. Your academic achievements can therefore be recognised at your home university. For this, the European Credit Transfer (ECTS) System has been introduced - it makes the recognition and transfer of acadamic achievements between universities easier.
Each course or lecture equals a certain amount of ECTS-Credits which you will receive after passing an examination. The entire academic year equals 60 credits, a semester 30 credits and a trimester 20 credits. Please keep in mind that you have to pass exams (or other kinds of tests) to get credits. You will not get credits for being abroad without passing examinations.
The following should be noted:
In advance of your time abroad, you'll need to check with your professors or their research assistands which courses of the university abroad are equal to those at TU Dresden and can be recognised. If possible, please hand the ECTS course catalogue to your professors so they can check the details.
The chosen courses will be recorded in the Learning Agreement which will be signed by the responsible officers at TU Dresden and at your guest university.
During your stay abroad you take part in the courses you chose in your Learning Agreement. If a course is cancelled, please contact your advisors at TU Dresden and the guest university immediately to find an alternative.
At the end of your stay abroad you'll receive the Transcript of Records from your guest university which proves that you've passed the examinations.
To make sure your academic achievements are recognised, you'll also need the detailed course descriptions of your guest university (in English). Please obtain these in time.
The recognition of the examination achievements will also be carried out by your study advisor after your return. After your return, please contact the examination office of your faculty to apply for the recognition of your achievements abroad. This procedure includes a corresponding - faculty-specific - application, the transcript of records or a comparable certificate or the detailed course descriptions.
The following steps should be followed:
- First of all, you need the Transcript of Records of your host university and the corresponding form for the recognition of your examination achievements from the examination office. Teacher training students need the application for recognition of examination achievements and the form for recognition of study or examination achievements acquired abroad from the ZLSB.
- With this, you will go to your academic advisor, who will work with you to complete the appropriate forms.
- Return to the Examination Office with the completed forms.
Please note that the recognition of achievements is not always handled directly by the examination office; at some faculties, these tasks are also handled directly by the respective subject representatives, by the study advisor or by the international representative. Please ask the examination office or your exchange coordinator about the procedure.
