"In seinem filmischen Porträt der Stadt Rom lässt Paolo Sorrentino einen alternden Autor durch ein Bildkompendium klassisch italienischer Kunst und Architektur flanieren. Als Mitglied der römischen High Society auf Sinnsuche reflektiert die Hauptfigur das Gesehene durch die Augen der westlichen Moderne. Das Werk schöpft dabei aus einem Pool von Referenzen zu Filmen wie Fellinis La dolce vita, Scolas La terrazza oder Rosselinis Roma città aperta. In cineastischen Einstellungen posieren die Filmkulissen wie Modelle für Bilder und stehen neben Metabildern, die in Reminiszenzen vom alten Rom berichten. Von dieser vergangenen Epoche der Stadt sind nur noch Ruinen übrig, die von einstmaligen sozial-gestalterischen Idealen zeugen. So versinnbildlicht der Film Rom als lädierte Zeugin der Befreiung des italienischen Kinos durch den neorealistischen Film und fragt nach dem Vermächtnis dieser Zeit. La grande bellezza gelingt es mittels der visuellen Rezeption dieser Ära des italienischen Kinos, die Antwort im strittigen Merkmal des Schönen zu finden, das in der Gegenwart als eine Attraktion des Vergänglichen inszeniert wird."
