New article on memes: „Contested Image Practices of Public Shaming“ by Verena Straub

In her text „Contested Image Practices of Public Shaming“ Verena Straub analyzes an Internet-meme that emerged in response to a photographic act of shaming against Palestinian detainees, involving a former IDF soldier. A close analysis of the meme’s variations shows that – instead of a collective act of shaming back – the meme creates affective publics that are highly dynamic, politically ambiguous and contested.
