Tanja-Bianca Schmidt in a panel discussion on racism-critical curating
Tanja-Bianca Schmidt spoke with curator Benedikt Fahrnschon (Kunsthalle Bielefeld) and historian Prof Dr Antje Flüchter (SFB 1288, Bielefeld University) as part of the exhibition series ‘miteinander gegenüber’ (facing each other), a cooperation project between the Collaborative Research Centre 1288 (Bielefeld University) and the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. Dr Marina Böddeker, Science Communication Officer at the SFB 1288, moderated the discussion.
Under the title ‘Blickwechsel: Rassismuskritisches Kuratieren und Vergleichen von Bildern’ (Changing perspectives: curating and comparing images critical of racism), the participants explained how new meaning can arise from the interplay of different works that the individual works would otherwise not have. The sensitivity to reflect on racism and collonialism when curating exhibitions is a necessary skill in order to grasp the entire spectrum of statements made by exhibits and exhibitions.
