Who we are

Like no other text, the Bible has influenced not only Jewish and Christian faith, but also European culture – and is still influencing it today.
The focal area of research at the Chair of Biblical Theology in Dresden is the Old Testament. The Chair is characterised by interdisciplinary and internationality, and focuses both on transfer and practice.

Biblical Theology

The following questions provide an insight into our activities and invite you to find out more on the pages of the Chair of Biblical Theology:

  • In addition to authority and canonicity, diversity and ambiguity are essential characteristics of the Bible. - Which interpretation of biblical texts is thus appropriate?
  • The Babylonian exile (from about 586 B.C.) can be regarded as THE situation of upheaval in the history of Israel. - How is the struggle for the reconstitution of Israel reflected in post-exile texts of the Old Testament?
  • The speech of God and the speech of man, as we encounter them in the Old Testament, are shaped by the ancient oriental world of images. - What symbolism is associated with the plant world? Why is the only God also a comforting mother?
