The professorship conducts externally funded projects principally at the intersection of epistemology, decision theory, and social philosophy.
Current Project
Restorative Epistemic Justice: Epistemic Redress and Forgiveness in Non-Ideal Environments — funded by the Volkswagen Foundation under the "Aufbruch" programme for new research areas in the humanities. The project investigates how epistemic injustices can be remedied, focusing on concepts such as epistemic redress and forgiveness, which aim at restoring damaged relationships and trust. Involving PD Dr. Rico Hauswald and Dr. Pedro Schmechtig.
Earlier Projects
Norms and Nature of Acceptance — funded by the German Research Foundation, in cooperation with Dr. Alexander Dinges (Düsseldorf). On the concept of acceptance and its role in epistemology, decision theory, and philosophy of language. Begun at the professorship and now continuing at Saarland University. Project website
Trapped in the Net? Opportunities and Perspectives of Epistemic Network Analysis — funded by the Sächsische Aufbaubank. On the epistemic networks in which people are situated, with a focus on digital communication spaces and belief formation about politically sensitive topics. Project website
Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (2022–2025) — a BMBF-funded interdisciplinary consortium; the epistemological and medical-theoretical sub-project was led by PD Dr. Rico Hauswald.
The Disruptivity of Outsiders — a sub-project within TUDiSC, together with Prof. Dr. Stefan Scherbaum (psychology) and Prof. Dr. Marc Wolfram (transformation studies). On the role of epistemic outsiders in transformative processes such as decarbonisation. Project website
Testimonial Assurances and Epistemic Authorities (2020–2023) — funded by the DFG; led by Dr. Pedro Schmechtig.
Knowledge and Decision (2016–2022) — a DFG Emmy Noether research group led by Prof. Dr. Moritz Schulz, at the interface of epistemology and decision theory, aiming at an integrated theory of theoretical and practical rationality. Project website
A Multidimensional Theory of Wisdom — funded by the DFG; Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schönrich and Dr. Pedro Schmechtig. Towards a theory of wisdom starting from the notion of wise decision-making, from which personal wisdom and the value of wisdom are derived.
Analysis and Explanation of Epistemic Values (2012–2015) — funded by the DFG; led by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schönrich. On what is epistemically valuable, and on the Meno problem: why knowledge is more valuable than true belief.
Semiotics of Institutions / Ontology of Institutions (1997–2008) — a sub-project within DFG Collaborative Research Centre 537, "Institutionality and Historicity". On how institutions maintain continuity through change despite temporal variation.
