Two new journal articles on normativity and compliance with human rights norms.
In the co-edited special issue of the Oxford Journal of Human Rights Practice, "The State of the International Human Rights System", Prof. Dr. Dominik Steiger discusses issues of normativity and compliance in the international human rights system in two articles.
In "The State of the International Human Rights System-Normativity and Compliance" (pp. 1-16), Prof. Dr. Steiger, together with Prof. Dr. Thomas Kleinlein, addresses the challenges and shortcomings of the 2020 Human Rights Treaty Body Review. These are placed in the context of the broader discussion on human rights normativity and compliance.
The focus of the article "Enhancing Compliance and Fostering Normativity by Institutionalizing Dialogue-The Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention Against Torture: A Comment" (pp. 160-168) is the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture. The goal of the commentary is to analyze the specifics in light of the broader scholarly discussion on compliance with norms. It also examines how the features of the Protocol affect the normativity of the prohibition of torture.
