Methods training
In teaching, the Chair offers courses on qualitative and quantitative methods. Within the framework of the Sociology programme (Bachelor, Master), it is involved in the introductory courses on social science methods. In addition, it offers in-depth courses on special social science methods (e.g. online surveys, questionnaires, observation, interviewing, various procedures of data analysis).
Methods training
Empirical social research is represented in teaching in the sociological degree programmes. Natalja Menold plays a major role in the lecture series Introduction to the Methods in Empirical Social Research (1st and 2nd semester). In the advanced module (3rd and 4th semester), seminars are offered in which students learn and practice the use of these methods. In these seminars, it is of great importance to consistently apply the logic of the social science research process. Through their studies, students will be enabled to develop and implement optimal methodological procedures, taking into account application contexts and the available resources. For the statistical analyses, programmes such as Stata, R, Mplus and SPSS are used. Seminars are offered on various methodological topics as well as data collection and evaluation methods (sampling, questionnaire construction, online and mixed-mode surveys, general and specific statistical methods, structured interviews, observation). Within the framework of a methodological internship, students work as interviewers in telephone surveys in order to gain their own experience with interviewing and the challenges involved.
