Ivan Bakalov is Lecturer and Research Associate at the Chair of International Politics, TU Dresden. Previously he taught at Leiden University and at the University of National and World Economy (Sofia) and held visiting research fellowships at Philipps-University Marburg and the University of Vienna. He obtained a PhD in International Relations (with distinction) at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences in 2020.
In his research Ivan focusses on studying the concepts and theories of power in world politics with a particular interest in process-centred and historical materialist approaches. He conducts applied empirical research on the transformations of international and state-society relations in Eastern Europe. To connect his conceptual-theoretical and empirical research interests Ivan has specialised in process tracing and case study research.
Ivan is currently working on a pilot research project funded by the Deutsche Stiftung Friedensforschung “Violence and Transformation: The Political Economy of Russia’s War against Ukraine” that integrates a critical political economy perspective into the study of violence in transnational politics.
