Researching Protests? Guest Lecture by Dr. Piotr Kocyba followed by a Practical Project at CSD Leipzig
Why do people take to the streets? Who participates in protests? And how can these questions be answered with scientific precision?
On Thursday, July 2, 2026, we will welcome Dr. Piotr Kocyba from the Else-Frenkel-Brunswik-Institut (EFBI) as our guest speaker. In his lecture, he will explain the methodology of protest surveys and the fieldwork associated with them.
Protest surveys provide insights into the motivations, attitudes, and demographics of protestors, making them one of the central tools in social movement research. However, conducting such surveys raises numerous methodological questions—ranging from questionnaire design and controlling for sampling bias to the subsequent data analysis. In his lecture, Dr. Piotr Kocyba will provide an overview of the standardized protest survey method and demonstrate how these challenges are addressed in practice.
