Workshop Discussion: Educational Work in Contexts of Anti-Democratic Dominance

How can educational work succeed in places where anti-democratic positions and stakeholders are increasingly shaping everyday life? What changes when those committed to democracy come under pressure, certain topics become difficult to address, or right-wing stakeholders are well-connected locally? And what strategies help us maintain our action-taking capacity under such conditions?

On November 23, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., JoDDiD invites educators and other stakeholders from the fields of education, youth, culture, community, counseling, and remembrance work in the Görlitz and Bautzen districts to a workshop discussion at Rabryka in Görlitz.

The focus will be on concrete experiences from the field. In small case-study workshops, we want to discuss difficult situations from our daily work together, explore different approaches, and compile strategies that have proven effective on the ground. The discussion will explicitly address the limitations of such strategies, uncertainties, and the question of what support educational work needs under challenging local conditions.

In addition to working together on case studies, there will be opportunities for exchange and networking with other stakeholders from Eastern Saxony, as well as a brief academic presentation on current perspectives regarding anti-democratic normalization and the scope for action at the local level.

The workshop discussion is also part of a participatory research project by JoDDiD exploring how educational work can be structured in contexts of anti-democratic dominance. The experiences and perspectives drawn from practice serve as the starting point for this project.
