START Phase 2 (2024-2027): RESEARCH PROJECTS ON THE TOPIC OF DATA↔WORLDS

The second phase (2024-2027) will focus on the key topic of data↔worlds. By this we mean technical and cultural mediations of reality through data that significantly shape society and living environments. Data↔Worlds aims to research society and culture as synthetic realities.

Archive PHASE 1 (2020-24): FELLOWS AND THEIR RESEARCH PROJECTS

Archive: The fellows of the first project phase conducted research together with the artists of the Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden on the topic of artificial intelligence as a factor and consequence of social and cultural change. They wrote their dissertations on AI from 2020 to 2024 and regularly presented their research results to the public in various formats.

The Committees of The Schaufler Lab

The Board, consisting of internal and external experts from the fields of science and art, supports the spokespersons of the Lab in an advisory and evaluative capacity. The selection of the Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden scholarship holders is made by a commission consisting of teaching staff of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. A commission of experts from the field of art and culture selects the artist.

The The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden brings together early-career researcher from the humanities and social sciences as well as artist with researchers from the STEM subjects. Accordingly, the Lab is located at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as at the Office for Academic Heritage of TU Dresden, and cooperates with various institutes and facilities in the field of engineering sciences.

Apart from financial coverage for their doctoral project, the Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden offers talented young scholars from the humanities and social sciences close exchange with both fellow Kolleg students and artists working on related topics, access to a variety of event formats as well as to the established scientific landscape at TUD and to other partners in the network of DRESDEN-concept e.V., such as art and cultural institutions and other research facilities in the State Capital of Dresden.

In the Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden, the doctoral candidates work on their dissertation projects, which are in line with the main research topic of the respective phase. The fellows are actively involved in shaping the thematic focus of the Lab and play a pivotal role in communicating its topics to the University and to society.

All of the PhD candidates receive support for their doctoral thesis by two supervisors on equal terms from two different disciplines. The participants are offered differentiated continuing education. It comprises a general qualification programme that supports the early career researchers in successfully mastering their doctoral phase and preparing specifically for the next steps in their career. In addition, a special continuing education programme linked to the main research topic provides in-depth specialist knowledge from the STEM subjects.

In the first project phase, researchers of the Cluster of Excellence Center for Tactile Internet (CeTI), and the Scads.AI - Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence offered a structured course on the fundamentals of AI Computer Science and technical applications. Moreover, in the framework of internships, doctoral students had the opportunity to participate in the development of AI solutions and their application in engineering, and to develop and implement projects together.
