Doctoral project
Working title: Exploring Digital Twins in Sustainable Urban Development: Towards Inclusive Stakeholder Engagement and Climate Action
Subject area: Communication sciences
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Lutz Hagen, Prof. Dr. Orit Halpern
Abstract
The convergence of digital technology and environmental sustainability offers a potential approach to addressing climate change challenges. Digital twins, which are virtual replicas of physical systems, could significantly contribute to urban planning and sustainable development. However, realizing their full potential necessitates overcoming several challenges related to data collection, privacy, security, implementation, and inclusivity.
This PhD project aims to elucidate the multifaceted implications of employing digital twin technology in sustainability initiatives, particularly focusing on climate change mitigation and urban planning. The research will explore the societal and governance aspects of digital twin integration, as well as the impact of deep mediatization in urban environments. It seeks to identify the challenges and barriers to implementing digital twins and to examine the profound changes occurring in communities due to the widespread adoption of digital technologies.
By investigating these areas, the project intends to understand how digital twins and smart cities influence society and to provide actionable recommendations for stakeholders. These recommendations will aim to ensure the effective utilization of digital twins in fostering sustainable urban development and promoting a just implementation of digital technologies. Ultimately, this research aspires to contribute to the development of more resilient, efficient, and inclusive urban environments, addressing the critical intersection of digital innovation and environmental sustainability and to contribute to the advancement of scientific theory in this area.
